Ebikes, Mopeds and Pedelecs – What’s the Difference?

Primarily, there are two types of electric bike- Ebikes and Pedelecs. As their names suggest, Ebikes are designed just like a motor bike- with a throttle powered electric motor and brakes as well, while Pedelecs contain peddles, like normal bicycles and the electric motor adjusts its speed according to the intensity with which the rider peddles. All of these bikes contain rechargeable batteries to propel the motor, which can be recharged using electricity plug-in or other renewable sources of energy such as solar energy or water turbines (this process is still in the pipeline) in some cases.

The efficiency of these cycles are increased further using aluminum body frames and lighter 16” wheels- allowing them to cover longer distances at faster speeds. Since electric bikes are battery propelled, conservation of an otherwise limited source of energy, is one of the most important aspects of their design.

A moped is another category of electric bikes. Initially, mopeds referred to light weight bikes using a combustion engine, but recently faster and more powerful electric bikes have also been include in this category. On an average, an electric bike belonging to the 24V category can go up to 25 miles without needing a recharge. Other categories of bikes, belonging to the 48V range are more powerful and designed to cover longer distances, but with an added cost. Therefore, while purchasing a bike it is elementary that you choose the right bike and pay the right amount- according to your needs.
