Electric Bike Laws pertain to Wattage

In this blog post, we have tried to gather some of the most peculiar/important laws pertaining to license plate registration and ownership of electric bikes according to the various regions of the world. These regions have been picked up by the popularity of electric bikes in these regions. In most of these countries, various standards have been defined, according to which, electric bikes are either treated as normal bikes or they are graduated to the category of being motorbikes.

In the UK, for instance, any electric bike which is more powerful than 250 watts or can run faster than 25 mile an hour is considered as a motorbike and therefore, requires registration as per local laws.
Similarly, in the US, electric bikes fall in the same safety category as a normal bicycle would, except if they draw more than 750 watts of power, or run faster than 20 miles an hour. This translates into the fact that in the US, you need no license, registration or insurance in order to run or own an Ebike.

In countries like China however, there are some strict regulations regarding the usage of electric bikes. Although, using and running electric bikes is allowed at most places in China, there are laws in area like Beijing, where running an electric bike is against law, if not registered.

Similarly, in Canada, you do not need to get your electric bike registered until it draws more than 500 watts of power, or runs faster than 25km per hour.

Various countries have different rules, but most of these are based on either the motor wattage or the maximum speed which the bike can attain- to be on the safer side, it is better to check out with a local dealer and then get your bike registered if needed.
