Laws for Electric Bikes
Being a new concept, there are very few laws concerning electric bikes and their ownership, and the few laws that do exist are very obscure and unclear for a regular rider to understand. This write up aims to explore such loopholes/missing elements of laws concerned with electric bikes or their ownership.
In countries like the US and Canada, proper laws have been laid down, at the national level, concerning electric bikes. Although these laws are made applicable in the entire country, these tend do be rather confusing as different states within the US/Canada have their own set of rules regarding the usage of electric bikes. Usage of proper safety equipment, usually equipment needed for riding normal bicycles, is mandatory in almost every part of the world. At some places, you might need to wear a proper motorist helmet, while in other regions; you might get away with lighter gear.
There are some parts where Ebikes are not allowed to be driven on roads meant for 'regular' traffic; rather, they are allowed to be ridden on the pathways made for cyclists and strollers.
There are some strict laws pertaining to the ownership of an electric bike as well. At some places, there are laws which require you to get your bike registered and get a registration number, before you can get them on the road. This is usually the case when your bikes cross a certain wattage level- say 200 watts in most cases.
These laws vary from country to country, and the reader is suggested to go through local rules or ask a local professional in order to prevent a traffic ticket.
