How to Weather Proof Your Electric Bicycle
[ad#ad-3]
My last last post gave some information on riding your electric bike in the rain. As you are now aware, riding your bike in wet weather isn't a problem unless you completely submerge your bike under water. This article will explain how you can better protect your bike from wet weather and moisture. To begin you need to understand that you need to protect two things:
1. The wire connections between the different components of your kit.
2. The components themselves in which there may be some possible openings where water may creep into them.
Okay, now that we have identified these two critical areas in which we need to protect, now lets examine the different parts of the electric conversion kit and how they can be better protected.
The first part you need to look at is the hub motor. The area that needs protecting is the connection from the hub motor to the controller. The hub motor itself is already protected and has a sealed water resistance, so in this case the connection is the part that you need to pay most attention to. What you need to do is cover the connections with electrical tape to reduce water seepage in this area.
The next section on your electric bicycle conversion kit is the controller. Two things need to be done in this area. Firstly, where the wires come out of the controller there is some room for water seepage to occur. With a clear outdoor silicon you can seal this area. Secondly, any other connections need to be covered with electrical tape.
The next area on your electric bike that needs to be examined is of course the battery. You do need to be mindful that the battery is the only part that needs to be removed often. Thus be careful when covering up the connections between the battery and the controller. It is recommended that you do not try and cover up the battery as they do produce some heat.
The final area that needs protecting is probably the most important area on your electic conversion kit. Water getting into your throttle can cause your electric bike to cease working properly. It is critical that you use a clear silicon to seal any edges that water can seep into. And of course tape up the connections between the throttle and the controller.
Weather proofing your electric conversion kit is not critical in your quest for proper care of you kit. You need to remember that the kits are reasonably well water proof in the first place. The above instructions however, will give you kit a better chance of survival in regular wet weather or in very heavy weather conditions.
I hope this article was helpful and would welcome any other ideas in which you can weather proof your electric bike.
